Aftercare for Your Tooth Extraction
After the tooth is removed, your body begins healing right away, and the first day is the most important. Keep the gauze in place for the first hour to help the clot form, replacing it only if needed. Avoid rinsing, spitting, or drinking through a straw for 24 hours since strong suction can dislodge the clot. Stick to soft foods and chew on the opposite side to keep the area undisturbed. After the first day, rinse gently with warm salt water to soothe the area and keep it clean. Continue brushing, but avoid the extraction site until the tissues look calmer.
Mild swelling or tenderness is normal, and Dr. Alex Franco may recommend over the counter pain relievers if needed. If pain increases or something feels off, schedule a quick check so she can ensure the site is healing properly.

How long does healing take?
Most patients feel back to normal within a few days. Complete healing of the gum area can take 1 to 2 weeks depending on the tooth and your health.
What should I avoid after the procedure?
Avoid drinking through straws, smoking, or eating hard foods for a few days. We'll send you home with detailed instructions and check in if needed.
Will I need a replacement tooth?
Sometimes yes, especially if it's a molar or front tooth. We'll talk options like implants, bridges, or partials before you commit to anything.
Is tooth extraction the last resort?
Always. If the tooth can be saved with a crown, root canal, or other treatment, we'll recommend that first. Extractions are done only when necessary.
Does getting a tooth pulled hurt?
Nope. Dr. Franco uses local anesthesia to fully numb the area. You may feel slight pressure, but no pain. Aftercare is key, and we'll walk you through all of it.
